Joey Fuson founded Hemp Law Group in 2019 with one goal: give the people building Tennessee’s hemp industry legal representation that actually understood the industry.
Born and raised in Middle Tennessee, Joey graduated cum laude from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville before earning his J.D. at Nashville School of Law. In 2009 he partnered with Mark Freeman to form Freeman & Fuson, where he has spent nearly two decades as a criminal defense trial attorney. His practice runs heavily to DUI and cannabis defense, and he has represented clients in more than 30 counties across Tennessee.
That work gave him a front-row seat to the gap between how the law treated hemp businesses and what those businesses actually needed to operate legally. Defending people charged over a plant that Congress had already legalized made the problem hard to ignore. Hemp Law Group came out of it.
Today the group works with hemp businesses at every stage, running proactive compliance programs designed to take the weight of regulation off the client so they can get back to running the business.
